Keep your PC’s updated

One of the easiest ways to protect your business network is keeping your computers updated. Just by setting Windows Update to automatically download and install them goes a long way. However almost all computers also use third-party software, such as Adobe Reader, Java, and Adobe flash. These software programs can be just as vulnerable as Windows and if your using a third party browser, like Google Chrome, even more susceptible to attack due to it being a web browser.

If your a small business, one of the easiest software to use and that has a “set it and forget it” type of usability is Desktop Central by Manage Engine. If you have less than 25 computers, they offer a FREE version that will keep all your computers fully updated including third party applications. I recommend you download the free version, run through the setup of installing it on a computer in your network, configure, and be done. You can even setup reports to confirm everything is staying up to date.

I expect the product to only get better. Recently Desktop Central was bought by ZoHo, which is a large company that offers an extensive list of software, majority of which all contain a type of free version. They also updated to include a extremely good looking web interference with a responsive design.

I do not plan to go into detail on how to install, they provide detailed instructions on their website on how to deploy and install the software. In fact, they have some of the best documentation out of their competitors.  You can get started here  https://www.manageengine.com/products/desktop-central/help/getting_started/installing_desktop_central.html

Many more features than just patching

On a final note, the software also includes a remote administration tool. This allows you to remotely connect to your machines form anywhere. This can be extremely helpful for troubleshooting or any other administrative task. A view of what that looks like is below. Did I mention they have a iOS and Android app that allows you to do everything from your phone too?
